Abstract:
Saline lakes from Transylvanian Basin (Central Romania) are either natural or man-made ecosystems whose biotic composition, structure and functioning are poorly known. Most knowledge about these extreme environments deals with abiotic features and, in some cases, with simple records of flora and fauna taxa. Many neutral saline lakes from Transylvanian Basin have a thick hypersaline hypolimnion (>25% salinity), a proper niche for halophilic prokaryotes. As part of the metacommunity, archaeal population might play a key role within the food web of salt lakes. Our research aim is to elucidate the diversity (structure and composition) of archaea that are possibly thriving in hypersaline water and water-sediment interface of several salt lakes from Transylvanian Basin, in order to further unveil their functioning and role in the studied ecosystems. To achieve this aim, culture-independent and culture-based methods will be used together with bioinformatic and statistical approaches. The molecular diversity of archaeal populations, in correlation with physical-chemical parameters of chosen sampling sites, will be assessed by PCR amplification of archaeal 16S rRNA gene, followed by DGGE, construction of clone libraries, sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA genes. Effects of human activities on archaeal diversity and distribution in several saline lakes will also be evaluated. Alternatively, we propose to isolate novel archaeal strains by culturing them on selective media

Abstract:
The long-term objectives of the projects are: (1) to establish a standard procedure of AAT insertion into standard therapeutic methods for ASD children (i.e. Social Story method) and (2) to better understand the physiological mechanisms of the therapeutic effects of human-animal interactions on clinical population. These objectives will stimulate the development of a solid Research Center for the study of the human-animal interactions.
