Abstract:
All over Europe objects in museums, historic buildings or in libraries are being affected either by display or by storage conditions. Unsuitable environmental conditions are a serious threat for the artefacts’ conservation and greatly reduce their lifespan as frequently the induced damage may remain invisible for a long period, while the inner structures may already have been seriously weakened. The potential impact of climate change on the cultural heritage (CH) adds growing reasons for concern and raises new challenges for all actors sharing the responsibility of CH preservation. Sustainable preventive conservation strategies involving the application of science-based knowledge, conservation skills and information technology are required to achieve the right balance between the need to protect CH and the increasing demand for its access or use. In the context outlined by both the economic crisis and depletion of traditional energy sources there is a pressing need to ensure that energy, money, personnel and other resources are being utilized most effectively for the long-term preservation of collections. Museums, libraries and various CH organizations are therefore called upon to justify costs and allocation of resources. Their budget and skills however do not allow them to address and find solutions to such complex problems. INherit project thus fulfils the need for national mobilization of knowledge, expertise, skills and resources to deliver effective solutions for managing the museum and library environment so as to achieve both collection preservation and cost efficiency. To this end the project will develop:
1) Intelligent multi-sensor systems for environmental monitoring and management in museums and libraries
2) Damage functions of deterioration of organic heritage materials
3) Improved environmental guidelines based on the damage level of collections and local climate parameters
4) Recommendations for low-cost climate control systems in museum and library depots
The current scientific and technical barriers will be lifted by integration of multiple expertise and skills of the Consortium partners in the design and development of project’s end products. INherit is a strong interdisciplinary project that integrates the results from distant disciplines as natural sciences and humanities. Its success will be secured by its innovative features:
Flexibility: adaptability to the needs and specificities of end-users
Openness: ability to incorporate new knowledge generated during the project and beyond
Synergy: interaction between research partners, developer and end-users during the project and beyond the project conclusion
Focus: unify and solve interrelated problems as preventive conservation, energy consumption, resources distribution.
The benefits arising from the exploitation of both the scientific and technological outcomes of the projects are:
• Decisive improvement of museum / library environment
• Best preventive conservation practice and strategy
• Effective allocation of resources for the long-term preservation of collections
• Enhanced capacity of networking within the CH community
• New knowledge on heritage materials
• Patents for web tools (hardware, software)
• Better leverage of funds for science and technology dedicated to CH at national level
• Training of future researchers and CH professionals ensuring that the project’s benefits will continue well beyond its end
• Strengthened transdisciplinary research and collaboration in the CH field.
