Abstract:
THE SUBJECT OF OUR PROJECT, THE ONOMASTICS FROM THE CONTEMPORARY ROMANIAN PUBLIC SPACE: A SOCIO- AND PSYCHOLINGUISTIC RESEARCH, CONCERNS THE NAMES OF PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS, ORGANIZATIONS, FIRMS, BRANDS, SPORTS TEAMS THAT HAVE BEEN ACTIVE IN POST-REVOLUTION ROMANIA (AFTER 1989). OUR RESEARCH DEALS WITH THE LEAST STUDIED SEGMENT OF ONOMASTICS: OFFICIAL NAMES, OTHERS THAN ANTHROPONYMS OR TOPONYMS. AS NONRITUAL NAME GIVING, THE CHOICE OF A NAME FOR AN ORGANIZATION OR A FIRM IMPLIES AN OFFICIAL ASPECT. IF THE PRIEST OR THE GODFATHER IS NOT INVOLVED, THE ACT IS NO LONGER SACRED AND CEREMONIAL, BOTH FEATURES OF THE CHRISTENING OF NEWBORNS. ANTHROPONYMICALLY SPEAKING, REGISTERING FIRM NAMES IN A NOMENCLATOR CORRESPONDS TO OFFICIALIZING CIVIL NAMES, BUT WITH IMMEDIATE SOCIAL IMPLICATIONS REGARDING COMMUNICATION AND ADVERTISING. FROM A SOCIOLINGUISTIC PERSPECTIVE, FIRM NAMES ARE A DIAGNOSTIC INDEX OF THE SOCIAL STRUCTURE AND OF THE INTERACTION PROCESSES SPECIFIC TO A COMMUNITY. FROM A PSYCHOLINGUISTIC PERSPECTIVE, THERE IS A PREDICTABLE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE STRUCTURE OF THE NAMES AND THE MENTAL PROCESSES OF THE INDIVIDUALS THAT GENERATE AND USE THEM IN A GIVEN COMMUNICATION CONTEXT. COGNITION, MEMORY, AFFECTS, TEMPERAMENTS DETERMINE THE CREATION AND STRUCTURE OF COMPANY AND INSTITUTION DENOMINATIONS. THE NAMES WE FOCUSED ON MADE USE, WHEN THEY WERE FORMED, OF ALL THE WORD-FORMATION PROCESSES/TYPES: DERIVATION, COMPOUNDING, CLIPPING, MAKING ACRONYMS, AS WELL AS BORROWINGS FROM FOREIGN LANGUAGES AND CALQUE FORMATION. THEREFORE, OUR PROJECT OFFERS A NOVEL, PLURIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH CAPABLE OF UNRAVELING THE MECHANISMS THAT DETERMINED THE CHOICE AND THE USE WITHIN A SOCIETY OF CERTAIN NAMES REPRESENTATIVE OF THE PRESENT ROMANIAN PUBLIC SPACE, DENOMINATIONS WHICH ARE EMBLEMATIC OF THE FIELD OF ACTIVITY OR THE PERSONALITY OF THE MAIN CHARACTER (THE NAME GIVER) IN THE PROCESS OF NAMING FIRMS/BRANDS.
