Abstract:
Romania is the most unequal country in the EU since 2007, with a current Gini coefficient of 37.8. In 2013 the income quintile ratio (S80/S20) ranked Romania first in the EU. Such inequalities have fuelled concerns about further polarization of economic development. As such, there is a high demand for a more comprehensive understanding of uneven geographical development. Although the economic literature emphasizes the important role of personality traits like creativity, intelligence, and/or openness/flexibility in economic performance, the empirical research of the interconnectedness between personality traits and the economic performance of regions remained poorly researched. Against this background, the proposed project draws together social sciences (i.e., psychology, economics, sociology, human geography) research capacities on socio-economic inequalities and the modelling tradition (in physics). This includes research on psychological characteristics (e.g., personality traits), social and economic disparities, as well as the logics of modelling social and economic processes. With its interdisciplinary layout and the spatial focus, the project also contributes to the emerging supra-disciplinary field of econo-physics. Classical research in the field is interested in how psychological characteristics are related to various political, economical, social, and health (PESH) indicators. Our approach here is radically different. The core frontier idea of the project is that the aggregated psychological characteristics should not be only related to PESH indicators in various geographical regions, but (1) they should be expressed in psychological maps and then (2) they should be conceptualized as mechanisms behind individual-level behavior that in the end is expressed in terms of macro-level PESH indicators. Therefore, creating the first psychological-geographical profile of Romania help us to better understand and model the “causal nexus” of spatial inequalities.

Abstract:
The current challenges that the EU faces highlight, as never before, the Union’s crucial need to move forward on its integration and convergence path, as well as the necessity to manage more efficiently any potential dilution risks and threats. Thus, the EU needs to find new approaches and action tools that would be most adequate for the current economic, political and geopolitical context and for the specificities of each member state. In this context, the project proposes a ground-breaking analytical model for the study of resilience with the case study of Romania, although with a wider applicability at European and international level. As such, the project offers a new and state-of-the-art comprehensive model of resilience in a multi-disciplinary, multi-level and multi-actor approach and will consolidate the knowledge in and about the European and particularly Romania’s regional growth and development perspectives. As such, the current proposal aims to design and provide new approaches, methods and instruments for EU policies towards deeper convergence, regional development and growth.
The research activities and results will greatly benefit from the participation of lead experts with wide expertise and international visibility, in both the research teams and the management structures which will enhance considerably the quality, competitivity and visibility of Romanian research activities and results at international level. Thus, the position of director of the project will be filled by Peter Nijkamp, Emeritus Professor in Regional Economics and in Economic Geography, who will definitely ensure high quality and visibility of the action. The potential impact of the proposed project is consistent as it has high scientific and normative relevance, as well as a consistent explanatory power and it will respond to key priorities in several areas of strategic interests on the EU and Romania’s agendas.

Abstract:
The Public Health Management Approaches in the context of the COVID-19 Pandemic project
aims to support the authorities involved in the fight against COVID-19 by carrying out the technical project of an integrated open source platform for public health management focused on COVID-19 pandemic, making the functional prototype of the platform, preparation of installation documentation, administration, use and technical support of the portal and of the specific modules and by identifying, realizing, testing and validating the specific APIs that will be implemented within the platform. The project, the first of its kind in Romania, is a collaboration between an advanced research university, a relevant institution in the field of public health policies, which coordinates national and regional public health centers specializing in surveillance and control of communicable diseases, and a private company. The portal and all component modules will be developed and published under the Open Source license and will be available through the GitHub web hosting service. The portal will be developed so that it can be used in optimal conditions both through personal computers and mobile devices, thus facilitating its use in disadvantaged environments. The solutions offered will allow its further development and ensure a high level of versatility through the possibilities of automatic and daily retrieval of available data from authorized sources, as long as they will be provided through the APIs by the provider, creating and implementing templates which will be used to populate with relevant information the e-learning and e-recruitment modules will ensure the possibility of further expansion of the system, the integration of text information with multimedia resources within the e-learning and e-recruitment modules.

Abstract:
Promoting renewables at the national level is reaching a new dimension at the moment, being closely related to the launch of a feed-in tariff scheme but it is more important to maximize the power generation while giving stability to the current investments so as to achieve high rates of power performance.
Up to now the promotion schemes have been more oriented towards investment and increase in profitability and they have left as marginal the issues regarding the production with a high efficiency and the achievement of an optimal power production based on investments.
The project’s goal is exactly the initiation of an monitoring, command and control system, based on a cloud solution that is able to support the decision process, in order to increase power production and profits, but also to maintain the best condition of equipments from the renewable energy power plant.
The launched issue is based on models of analysis, information systems able to integrate fixed and dynamic procedures, weather forecasts, intelligent databases, data and nominal characteristics, data and actual performances required to find a technical and economical optimum.
At the national level, the optimization of power production capacities can only have a positive impact; from the load curve obtained from Romanian National Power System (SEN) published by Transelectrica, it can be noticed that the days with great solar potential are making the power injected into the network hardly exceed 50% of the installed power, which proves that the existing green certificates scheme, in the field of PV, left on the last place the production performance, hence the current very strong demand to develop intelligent systems able to be included in the decision-making chain of the PV power plant operator in order to maximize the revenues.

Abstract:
Starting from the modern technology that belongs to our partner (electricity supplier), which is the pilot system for electricity consumption smart metering (SM), we will develop a business intelligence informatics system in order to manage a large volume of data that are generated by SM/intelligent appliances.
Once the technology has been implemented, our partner needs informatics solutions in order to:
- graphically process and report based on electricity consumption data;
- provide real time and advanced data analyses;
- provide information for decision making factors in order to conclude contracts/prepare bids on the electricity markets and establish the advanced tariff systems;
- build dynamic consumption profiles for individuals or groups of electricity consumers;
- contribute to efficiency improvement, pollution reduction by promoting RES integration and sustainable development by optimization model;
- transparently and completely automatize the metering process, analysis and processing of electricity consumption data;
- improve its image, retain and attract more electricity consumers/prosumers;
- double check the electricity consumption meters.
Taking into account the competitive environment among Romanian suppliers and innovative needs of metering systems, our partner needs informatics solutions that will allow its consumers to:
- identify energy intensive appliances and take measures to streamline or replace them;
- optimize and forecast the electricity consumption, that will reduce expenses and peak consumption;
- perform real time analyses, view graphical trends and access reports related to the electricity consumption.
The proposed theme of our project has an innovative and interdisciplinary character, involving specialists from both fields(energy and IT&C).
