Abstract:
The project ‘Comprehensive Approach to support Precision Agriculture and environmental management through satellite technologies and classic methods of investigation – CAPA’, addresses a major direction of the 21st century, namely, smart agriculture, bringing new insights into how the climate affects the phenological cycle of crops (through the occurrence of extreme events) and it also contributes to understanding the role of different air pollutants (such as greenhouse gases) in crop development. The project proposes the realization of synergies of the scientific activities integrating data on the complex eco-agro-system-culture relations, obtained by applying a conglomerate of methods and techniques (space technologies, the study of pollutants at the level of air, water, soil and plants), for a modern management of agricultural crops, in the context of intelligent agriculture. At the international level, smart agriculture is also based on the optimized management of the inputs according to the real needs of the crops, for their management and the reduction of the use of fertilizers, fungicides, pesticides and water resources. At the national level, the exploitation of satellite records in the field of agricultural management has not yet a significant spread, being used mainly in applications dedicated to environmental protection, forestry, territorial planning or in the military field. In this context, the project proposes the application and integration of spatial technologies together with in situ and ex situ analyses in the intelligent management of agriculture to monitor certain types of agricultural crops (from a pilot site), thus allowing the development of a successful model for better capitalization. of available resources.

Abstract:
Catalytic ozonation is a highly efficient process for removing most resistant organic pollutants from water and is a key process in wastewater treatment. Improving these technology in order to comply with green chemistry challenges is an important goal purification industry. Catalysts are the core of the process and, in the last decade, numerous studies and patents proposed a large range of materials for better ozone transformation into hydroxyl radicals and performing complete oxidation of the organic substrate. This project proposes a new and innovative class of ozonation catalysts with a morphology that assures an easy contact of ozone and pollutants with solid surface (thin-films) and green and cheaper technology for catalyst preparation using plant extracts instead of harmful chemical reagents (borohydride and organic solvents)

Abstract:
The integration process between agriculture and environment promotes the development of agricultural practices that preserves the nature and the rural heritage (landscape and traditional life of people). EU directives (Water Framework or Nitrates) and the Rural Development Program define objectives and indicators to evaluate the agro-environmental impact of farm practices. The commercial goal to maximize returns and minimize costs increased the role of agro-technology, which is limited by the local resources.
As business, agriculture aims at production (maximize returns and minimize costs) and depends on the availability of local natural resources (water and soil) by exploiting this found. For growing the production, it is necessary to implement a modern approach based on exogenous data, as satellite imagery, integrated in a thematic GIS, for evaluating the real need in water and fertilizers at parcel level. Based on these considerations, the European COPERNICUS/GMES-Global Monitoring for Environment and Security- initiative aims the development of EO based public services able to create benefit for the agricultural sector. EC transferred at member state level the responsibility to develop and sustain at national locally adapted COPERNICUS services. GEOFARM will contribute to the development of the Romanian agricultural sector (affected by the land redistribution process generating an unstructured rural landscape).
The implementation of a service for farmers needs efforts for disseminate the knowledge in view of implementing the research results, taking into account the specific landscape/ environment and socio- economic contexts. Such a solution needs an important scientific investment and a multi-disciplinary approach.
This service will be developing in terms of integrating the technological tool within farming practices. It has to be optimized according to the diversified local farm typologies (described by the size of parcels, number and quality of equipments, orientation of the production), the environmental limitations (soil, climate, water source) and tacking into account the socio economic conditions which suffered significant negative evolutions and changes during the past 20 years.
The synergic analysis through satellite images and agro-models (as support for the sustainable management of farms) will allow the end-user to determine an optimal input for each affected area inside the plot, according to intra-parcel variability, by accessing a secured web interface, for visualize and locate the vulnerable areas.
The GEOFARM service has to be considering as a complementary advanced approach to already concluded FP 6 (PLEIADeS) or ongoing FP 7 (SIRIUS) COPERNICUS Core Services projects.

Abstract:
Natural products – including bio-active extracts that could be isolated from various vegetal sourses – may constitude the basis of many safety drugs. By this project, it intended to develop some innovative technology to obtain bio-active oils enriched in squalene from Roumanian vegetable sources – Amaranthus sp. and pumpkin (Cucurbita sp. seeds) (first objective) and to use them for developing some innovative nanostructured products with beneficial health properties. The exploitation of vegetable sources for obtaining various lipid nanoparticles derived from natural bio-active lipid oils enriched in squalene, represents a highly innovative research which has never been previously used in the nanotechnology field for some drug delivery and targeting purposes.
The ability to combine the bio-medical properties of developed vegetable oils with the unique properties of nanoparticles will be demonstrated in the frame of second project objective. Some bio-active lipid nanoparticles derived from intermediary bio-active oil fractions and/or natural squalene concentrates (>90%) will be applied as efficiently carriers for delivery and controlled release of two kinds of toxically/synthetic drugs (one antitumor drug and two synthetic sunscreens).
The third objective – development of new nanostructured bio-pharmaceutical products based on highly reproducible lipid nanoparticles derived from vegetal squalene oils – has the main purpose to the conditioning the obtained nanoparticles as solid and semisolid pharmaceutical formulations in order to develop innovative drugs with multiple bio-medical activities. In this respect, some in vitro and in vivo specific experiments (e.g. antioxidant, photo-protective, wound-healing and antitumoral) will be conducted for demonstrating their superior therapeutic performance.
Based on the results obtained from the previous objective and having in view the economical aspects, the final objective – demonstration of functionality of the experimental models, efficacy of the vegetable bio-products obtained, innovative drugs developed and the methods of analysis – will be accomplish by developing industrial batch “0”, meaning 3 or 4 new drugs that will be introduced for commercialization on the Romanian market.
