Abstract:
The aim of this proposal consists in the obtaining macroporous photocatalysts based on ecogenic metal oxides (ecoMO) (ZnO/CuO) composites through the robocasting technique, but also the evaluation the synergistic effect induced by the presence of microalgae in the removal of specific pollutants for wastewater treatment and the use of regenerated water in agriculture. The main objectives of the project are the following: (i) green synthesis of photo-catalysts based on metal oxides (ZnO, CuO) nanoparticles (NPs), (ii) 3D-printing structures based on ecogenic metal oxides by robocasting, (iii) the use of the obtained 3D photocatalytic structures based on metal oxides NPs to remove contaminants such as antibiotics or dyes from the wastewater generated by pharmaceutical/textile industry, (iv) the use of the microalgae to reduce the pollutant species generated during the photocatalysis process, and (v) the assessment of the synergistic effect induced by the 3D photocatalytic structures and microalgae at laboratory/semi-industrial/greenhouse level on synthetic wastewater (by adding drugs/dyes) and in real wastewater (treatment plants). This project has the following specific objectives: 1) Phytosynthesis and characterization of metal oxide, metallic NPs and their composites. 2) The use of ecoMO to treat, in laboratory, various synthetic wastewaters (containing organic dyes, drugs, etc.). 3) In vitro biological investigations [cytotoxicity evaluation by acute and chronic Aliivibrio fischeri assays (ISO 11348), acute algae (OECD 201) and Daphnia (OECD 202), and zebrafish embryo toxicity assay (OECD 236)]; and the ecoMO bio-impact on terrestrial and aquatic media will be tested. 4) The synthetic/real wastewaters (before and after the treatment with robocasted photocatalysts based on ecoMO composites) will be tested as follows: (i) in vivo on plants grown in the greenhouse (didactic and scientific research resort); (ii) in vitro on Aliivibrio fischeri for acute cytotoxicity (ISO 11348 standard) and for chronic toxicity in a high throughput assay adapted to microplates; Daphnia acute tests; and acute toxicity measurement on zebrafish eggs for wastewater qualification (ISO 15088). 5) Evaluation of the detoxification efficiency of different composite samples based on ecological metal oxide (ecoMO) nanoparticles and their robocasted photocatalysts by microalgae culture in a treated wastewater environment, but also of the synergistic effect induced by the presence of microalgae on the ecological composite of metal oxide nanoparticles or their robocasted photocatalysts based on ecoMO composites for the removal of certain pollutants. Upon our knowledge, there are no reports regarding robocasted photocatalysts based on ecoMO composites (ZnO/CuO). In the frame of circular economy, it is necessary to identify and develop efficient technologies for treatment of the residual waters generated by pharmaceutical, textile, etc. industries in order to use the reclaimed water for agriculture. The elimination of the pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) and dyes from water generated from pharmaceutical and textile industry is vital for using the reclaimed water in other fields such as agriculture. Thus, reclaimed water obtained through a synergistic effect induced by 3D-printed photocatalytic structures and microalgae can be used in agriculture activities. Moreover, taking into account that the increase of periods with high temperature has the direct effect of decreasing the flow of surface water, which also influences the flow of shallow underground water, the population can be constrains to reduce the crop irrigation. This impediment can be mitigated by reusing treated wastewater in agriculture. Consequently, the outcome of our proposal can improve the resilience and adaptation capacity of wastewater treatment facilities within the frame of hydroclimatic extreme events.

Abstract:
European Commission states that while industry accounts for 24% of European Union’s GDP, it also accounts for 40% of air pollutants and 20% of water pollutants. Developing clean advanced manufacturing techniques lowers the environmental impact and supports a greener, more efficient, sustainable and circular economy. Using lasers as a source of energy for additive manufacturing results in non-contact fabrication methods that produces virtually no waste products. In this context, BioSCOPE project addresses a major issue of public health related to bone diseases. The project will develop remotely operated, 3D orthopedic scaffolds with electromagnetically triggered drug delivery, for the repair of fractures in osteoporotic bone. Laser additive manufacturing will be used for producing custom 3D scaffolds able to release osteogenic drugs on demand, for improved osteointegration. The scaffolds will consist of two parts. A metallic inner part will act as support during fracture healing. The outer part consists of microreservoirs made from polymer - nanoparticle composite, loaded with osteogenic and antiresorptive drugs. Drugs will be incorporated in thermally responsive polymer matrices via immersion processes. Drug release will be triggered by local temperature increase induced by remotely applied electromagnetic fields. Overall, BioSCOPE will establish a proof of concept for a new generation of orthopedic implants with remotely triggered drug release for fracture repair.

Abstract:
The research subject of this project fits into a top field of scientific world and it is of economic and biomedical interest, aiming at the sustainable design of new multifunctional 3D nano-bioarchitectures, based on biohybrids (BH) which contain: biomimetic membranes/ phytosomes, phytopigments, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), chitosan and folic acid, for various biomedical applications. AgNPs will be eco-synthesized using aqueous vegetal extracts (from medicinal plants or insectivorous plants). The strategy for preparing these hybrid formulations will be as economical and ecological as possible. Several types of BH with different compositions will be prepared using a "bottom-up" approach and will be investigated by modern biophysical methods: UV-Vis-NIR, FT-IR, fluorescence, chemiluminescence, DLS, EDX, XRD and microscopy (AFM, TEM, SEM). The concentration of AgNPs in biohybrids will be evaluated by ICP-OES/ ICP-MS. The stability over time of these biohybrids will be studied by spectral monitoring and by measurements of the zeta potential. The effect of these biohybrids on urease will also be investigated. The bioperformance of BH will be evaluated from the point of view of physical stability, biocompatibility, antioxidant, antimicrobial and antiproliferative activity; toxicological tests will also be performed.

Abstract:
Diabetes mellitus is a significant global health concern, with a rising prevalence and associated complications. Hyperglycemia disrupts bone remodeling, impairs wound healing, and affects inflammatory responses, leading to an imbalance between bone formation and resorption. Hyperglycemia also affects the surfaces of dental/orthopedic implants (DOI), potentially leading to corrosion and surface integrity issues. Multifunctional coatings applied on DOI may offer promising solutions. MIRCOND project aims to develop multifunctional coatings on based on bioglasses (BG), hypoglycemic medications, and Resveratrol using Matrix-Assisted Pulsed Laser Evaporation (MAPLE). MAPLE technique ensures controlled deposition and material integrity. The dissolution of BG in human fluids releases hypoglycemic medications and Resveratrol, providing localized glucose control, preventing oxidative damage, and enhancing osseointegration. Therefore, the MIRCOND project presents an innovative approach to reducing DOI failure in diabetes mellitus patients.

Abstract:
The project addresses a pressing healthcare issue. Nonhealing wounds represent a significant challenge due to the increasing incidence of conditions like diabetes and obesity, which can lead to complications like infections, sepsis, and limb amputations. Current wound treatments relying on antibiotics and antiseptics are becoming less effective due to rising antimicrobial resistance. Moreover, existing wound dressings often fail to fully restore the skin's natural functionality. This project's primary goal is to develop innovative wound dressings with a multifaceted approach. These dressings will possess antimicrobial, pain-alleviating, and regenerative properties, making them highly effective in treating infected and painful wounds. The dressings will be composed of cotton disks that are functionalized with a combination of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), Spirulina, and Ibuprofen. The cutting-edge Matrix Assisted Pulsed Laser Evaporation (MAPLE) technique will be employed to create these unique dressings. The project has broad socio-economic implications, as successful outcomes will alleviate the financial burden on healthcare systems and improve the quality of life for patients. Additionally, the research will foster international collaborations, enhance the team's scientific capacity, and contribute to fundamental knowledge in the field of biomaterials and wound care.

Abstract:
Intelligent PREdictive Maintenance for Aquaculture Systems is a research project aiming to improve the performance of aquaculture farms by introducing a novel platform and service for Intelligent predictive maintenance. The platform is based on innovative monitoring systems and smart infrastructure, relying on machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques.
The platform measures key parameters in real time introducing innovative multisensor gauges which feed a chain of ML models for Time Series Forecasting (TSF), Anomaly Detection (AD), Fault Classification (FC) and Remaining Useful Life (RUL) estimation. The measurements give the current health status of the farm site while the forecasts provide a glimpse of future status; analysis of the predictions allows to identify the potential need for preventive/corrective maintenance.
A cloud-based integration of the different components of the platform allows to improve connectivity and optimize the business process which lets the farmers benefit from a tailor made Software as a Service solution. The SaaS approach empowers the aquaculture farmers by providing a digital twin of their facilities ‘in their pocket’ The new service gives farmers real time access to the current health status of the farm and facilitates them planning activities and measures based on the forecasted status. In the end, the iPREMAS pursues cutting M&O costs for the farmer and giving additional tools for reducing negative effects to the environment in case of a calamity.

Abstract:
The use of metallic implants for bone implantation and replacement is an actual trend. However, their success can be undermined by poor osseointegration and infection occurrence, the two main problems associated to implant failure and revision surgeries.
The main objective of InnovaMed is to obtain improved implant-like surfaces synthesized by laser technologies, to contribute to early osseointegration and the prevention/eradication/control of severe implant associated infections.
We will improve the conventional medical grade stainless steel surfaces by transforming them into corrosion free surfaces. This will be achieved by surface coating with a functional ZnO layer by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The obtained ZnO coated surface will be covered with a multifunctional layer consisting of bioglass combined with statins and antimicrobial substances, which will allow for a fast osseointegration, and slow drug delivery and release. Due to the delicate nature of the organic mixtures, a gentler laser deposition technique will be used: matrix assisted pulsed laser evaporation (MAPLE).

Abstract:
The project will develop a platform which offers AFM users the possibility to directly check the state of their probes, and to clean potentially contaminated probes. Checking and cleaning are performed in-situ, leading to a reduction of wasted time and materials. The proposed platform integrates two components, both based on nanostructured materials. The successful implementation of the proposed project will deliver a device for in-situ checking and cleaning of SPM tips, validated in laboratory environment.
The tip checking part is a layer of nanostructured ceria (CeO2), in the form of sharp pyramid-shaped spikes. These structures will be grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD), as already reported at INFLPR by the host group, “Photonic Processing of Advanced Materials” (PPAM).
The tip cleaning part is made of nanostructured carbon in the form of nanowalls (CNWs, or vertical graphene sheets), which will act like a nano-brush. CNWs will be deposited by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), which was also reported at INFLPR, by the group “Plasma Processes, Materials and Surfaces” (PPMS).
The innovative association of the two nanostructured materials will allow AFM users to conveniently perform in-situ both checking and potential cleaning of the tips.
The TRL value at the beginning of the project is 2: we propose practical applications for the two nanostructured materials, based on their reported properties. The TRL value upon successful completion is 4: the project will deliver a platform for in-situ AFM tip checking and cleaning, together with checking and cleaning procedures, validated in laboratory environment.

Abstract:
Vertical graphene (VG, or carbon nanowalls - CNW) layers consisting of inter-connected vertical carbon sheets built from small graphene domains with their c-axis parallel the substrate, are promising materials for new electrical devices. Nevertheless, their electrical properties are not sufficiently known, i.e. due to their arrangement on the substrate, it is expected that the conductivity perpendicular on the c- axis (along with the sheets and perpendicular on the substrate direction) is different from the conductivity along the c-axis (parallel to the substrate).
In this project we will study the anisotropy of conductivity, aiming to explore the possibility to use it in gas sensors. With this purpose, we will synthesize vertically graphene layers with various morphological and microstructural characteristics, and we will elaborate and realize electrode structures allowing the measurement of electrical current flow along and perpendicular to the interconnected carbon sheets. In the end, we will determine how exposure to various gases affects these currents. Based on the results, a novel structure of the electrical gas sensor, based on conduction anisotropy, will be proposed. The vertical graphene layers will be deposited by Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition, injecting H2, and C2H2 (acetylene) in an Ar radiofrequency plasma jet. For material characterization SEM, AFM. RAMAN, and the XPS technique will be used. The electrical conductivity perpendicular on the substrate will be determined to make contact between the upper side of the VG layer deposited at glancing angle incidence by magnetron sputtering and a thin film electrode deposited on the substrate. The parallel to substrate conductivity will be determined with electrodes in the interdigitated geometry. The deposition of vertically graphene electrode structures activities will be performed in the Plasma Processes, Materials and Surfaces group at INFLPR. Demonstrating the feasibility of such sensors wil

Abstract:
Despite the technological progress of the last decade, dental caries is still the most frequent oral health threat in children and adults alike. Such condition has multiple triggers and is caused mainly by enamel degradation under acidic attack of microbial cells, which compose the biofilm of the dental plaque. The biofilm of the dental plaque is a multispecific microbial consortium, which periodically develops on mammalian teeth, and it can be partially removed through mechanical forces by individual brushing or in specialized oral care medical facilities. Inhibition of microbial attachment and biofilm formation, as well as methods to strengthen dental enamel to microbial attack represent the key factors in caries prevention. The purpose of this project is to elaborate a cold plasma based method in order to modulate microbial attachment and biofilm formation and to improve the retention of fluoride in an enamel-like model. In our approach, the obtained cold plasma will be tested for its capacity to determine fluoridation and improve fluoride retention in a hydroxyapatite based enamel-like material. Moreover, the impact of such cold plasma on the development of microbial biofilms under various relevant conditions will be established by in vitro studies. In this project, we will start with a technology-formulated concept based on a cold plasma treatment (TRL 1-2), and we will end by validating the technology in laboratory conditions, enlightening the plasma ability to improve fluoride retention and modulate microbial biofilm formation in an enamel-like hydroxyapatite based model (TRL 4). The obtained cold plasma with dual effect exhibited through biofilm modulation and enamel strengthen through fluoridation is intended for dental application such as the prevention and therapy of dental caries and enamel deterioration.

Abstract:
Our proposal (NANOCARBON+) is focused on a highly technologically relevant unifying topic: the exploitation of the recently demonstrated extreme properties of a specific class of carbon nanomaterials - nanostructured graphene, used in specific morphologies and compositional categories - towards the development of innovative technologies for essential eco-industrial areas (failure monitoring, pollutant detection/decontamination in air/water, green energy). The proposal is split in four composing projects, all of them aiming at exploring the use of these unique nanomaterials for the development of innovative and/or improved sensing devices in a range of applications with strong industrial impact.
The consortium behind this proposal has a good regional coverage and suitable research and development resources, both in terms of researchers and appropriate equipment. The consortium comprises of four National R&D Institutes and two Universities, distributed in three adminstrative regions.
The central objective of this complex proposal is an efficient integration of the scientific expertise and experimental capabilities, complementarities and synergies of the six consortium member organizations, towards augmenting their overall organizational performance.
The objectives of the proposal go well beyond the academic research; from the very begining of the execution, we aim at achieving a very good connection with SMEs and other industrial partners in order to understand market requirements and to be able to transfer suitable innovatibe technologies and further support the development of new products. Developing new technologies and services is one part of the expected output, contributing to the development of the partner's capabilities by opening new research areas; in addition, a special attention is devoted to the increase and development of the human resources involved in research. In this respect, the consortium does commit to creating 11 new research positions.

The consortium consists of three representative national institutes: INCD for Chemistry and Petrochemistry – ICECHIM Bucharest, INCD for Electrochemistry and Condensed Matter - INCEMC Timisoara and INCD of Chemical Pharmaceutical - ICCF Bucharest, and of two prestigious universities: University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest and the University of Bucharest and a remarkable institute of Romanian Academy: Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry – Petru Poni Iasi. Although having great tradition and noteworthy results, the first five institutions face a series of problems, from the lack of financial funds, equipment and the aging employees for ICCF and partly for INCEMC and ICECHIM, to the lack of highly qualified staff required for recent investments in equipment for all 5 institutions. In this respect, the project attempts relaunching the activity in the first 5 institutions of the consortium, by putting together the existing competencies, so as to develop new technologies in order to obtain new materials with high performance properties. Given that, 3 of the research teams are specialized in polymers (ICECHIM, Petru Poni and UPB) the developed technologies will use the polymers as intermediates or as a component in the finished product. To this end it is envisaged getting the titanium nitride for prosthetic coatings via inorganic-organic polymer nanocomposites, obtaining photocatalytic materials and antibacterial coatings by sol- gel reactions, obtaining of short-life or one-time use biomaterials from aliphatic polyesters and micro or nanocellulose and the development of new polyphase materials with medium or long life, based on biopolymers, through 3D printing. The project intends the full use of A1, A2, B and C checks in order to increase the institutional performance of partners.

Abstract:
Last decades brought a considerable development of technologies based on ordered systems. Starting with semiconductor physics and photovoltaics, technologies soon evolved towards the utilisation on large scale of thin films and of surface / interface properties. Example go nowadays from data storage and readout (electrostatic or magnetic memories, giant magnetoresistance) to catalysis, gas sensors or photocatalysis (surface phenomena), and towards interfaces with biological matter (biosensors, templates for tissue reconstruction, interfaces between biological electrical signals and microelectronics). In Romania, crystal growth is performed since half a century; nevertheless, during the last years these activities fade out and need to be seriously reinforced, especially with the advent of new laser and detector technologies required by the Extreme Light Infrastructure facilities. Also, surface science started to be developped seriously only during the last decade, together with techniques involving self-organized nanoparticles, nanoparticle production etc. The main goal of this Project is to gather the relevant experience from the five partners, namely the experience in crystal growth from the University of Timișoara, with the surface science, nanoparticle and nanowire technologies developped by NI of Materials Physics, the cryogenic and ultrahigh vacuum techniques provided by the NI for Cryogenic and Isotopic Technologie, and the experience in ordered 2D systems (graphene and the like) owned by the NI for Microtechnologies (IMT). This common agenda will result in a coherent fostering of technologies relying on ordered systems of variable dimensionalities: 0D i.e. clusters or nanoparticles, including quantum dots; 1D i.e. free and supported nanowires and nanofibers; 2D: surfaces, interfaces and graphene-like systems; and 3D crystals of actual technological interest, together with setting up new ultrahigh vacuum, surface science and electron spectroscopy techniques.

Abstract:
In this context, the economic agent, Optoelectronica 2001, through the TSCEH project, decided to increase the security level and the quality of their holographic labels, following a strategy based on technological transfer:
1. from the Microtechnology Institute of Bucharest, to include a new security element in the shape of submicrometric structures
2. from Politehnica University of Bucharest, to improve the optical and morphological properties, by iterative optimization of the characterization processes.
The results will be at TRL6:
obtaining a prototype of holographic label with a new security element, of submicrometric structure type (EHS), fabricated using a modified technology, demonstrated in industrial environment.
OPTOEL produces holographic labels using a technology based on a mask obtained with modulated laser beam. These labels contain many security elements as optical effects. The challenge of this project is to find the technological solutions to include in a free zone from this mask of the submicrometric structures made starting from electron beam lithography.
The innovative character of the TSCEH project is proven by:
1. Changes in the technological steps by finding the optimal solution to include the submicrometric structures
2. Improving the optical and morphological properties by setting the optimal values of the parameters involved in the technological processes.

Abstract:
The main aim of the proposal is the development of a versatile, stable and reliable technology process for the fabrication of multispectral photodetectors. Multispectral photodetections is required in a large range of space and security applications, including hyperspectral imaging systems for earth and planetary observation, surveillance, detection, alerting and recognition systems. We will develop a technology based on solution procesable semiconducting materials that can be easily deposed using low cost processes and integrated with a large range of substrates. We intend o offer to Romanian SMEs an alternative to the existing technologies for detectors that require expensive epitaxial growing or bonding of multi-layer structures to cover a wider spectral band, from UV to SWIR. We have obtained preliminary results in preparation and deposition of semiconducting thin films based on graphene nanocomposites and PbS quantum dots and experimental fabrication of test structures. The devices show better characteristics in terms of responsivity, dynamic and spectral range than previously published for for PbS-QDs photodetectors integrable with silicon circuits, and even higher than those recently reported for devices based on Si hererojunctions with new 2D materials grapehene or MoS2 monolayers, obtained with a more complex technology process. However, other characteristics (dark current, linearity, response time) have to be improved by including new process steps and interface engineering.
The work plan has a complex structure, including process development and optimization, integration of the main process steps into a versatile process chain, fabrication and characterization of test device to validate the developed technology.
The team involved in the proposal have complementary expertise in the field of optoelectronic devices, micro-nanotechnology & material development, and in advanced characterization techniques.

Abstract:
The main purpose of the project is to develop a robotic micromanipulation system with MEMS micro-grippers integrated with microsensors for position/force feedback control for cell manipulation. This will be achieved by developing a set of electro-thermally actuated end-effFectors with different functions (pick and place, pushing-pulling, gripping), in different configurations to be integrated in a robotic micromanipulation system. The end-effector and the integrated sensors will be designed and build at the system level, due to their interdependence not only at functional level but also considering the fabrication technology and component materials. Our implementations will integrate a micro-gripper with different sensing functionalities (force, displacement), the maximum attempt being the full instrumentation of the system. The demonstrator will be used for tailored functionalization of medical devices with cells, in demanded regions.

Abstract:
Microbial-electrochemical cells (MEC) can convert readily available substrates from “renewable” sources into hydrogen or electrical energy and presents an opportunity to make a major contribution to EU energy requirements. MEC is an environmental friendly method for wastewater treatment with self-sustained electricity generation using microorganisms. Development of feasible MEC technology could be the answer to the worldwide concern for development of alternative water reuse technology.
Our approach for improvement of MECs refers to the electrode design which can be considered the greatest challenge in making MEC a cost-effective and scalable technology. Optimizations of the electrodes and of the interface electrode/biofilms and cathode materials will result in higher power output and enable real world application of MEC. The novelty of the proposal is related to the development of new nitrogen doped carbon materials, their application for MEC and the new research direction related to the exploitation of MEC technology for heavy metal removal.
Another important objective of the proposal is to create a new research team establishing an independent research programme to reach knowledge and expertise for MEC applications bringing together the combined knowledge in the disciplines of physics, chemistry and biology. The results could be of enormous global environmental benefit by ensuring the optimization of MECs using new advanced materials.

Abstract:
The aim of the project is to develop an wafer level encapsulation method for MEMS structures.
Proposed method is based on using a solid lid, which will be applied over some test structures to check the method validity; different test structures will be considered, like planar waveguides (CPW), filters and MEMS switches. The lid will be made of silicon by its micromachining.
The lid will be bonded over test structures using 3 different methods: anodic bonding, thermocompression and by using adhesive layers (polymers).
Test structures contact will be performed using conductive through silicon vias manufactured in the lid (TSV – Through Silicon Via). The vias will be manufactured by dry etching of the silicon lid – a DRIE (Deep Reactive Ion Etching) equipment will be used in this case. For the lid structures with conductive TSV manufacturing, silicon wafers having different thicknesses will be used and 2 types of TSV will be tested, with vertical and tapered walls.
The conductive layer will be made of gold, which is a novelty in this field. For this 2 methods will be also used, one consisting of completely sealing using gold (will be completely filled for at least 50µm), the second one consisting in using of gold just for signal supply while via will sealed using different dielectric layers.

Abstract:
The present project proposes the development of X-ray mirrors by means of an original film deposition method, a high voltage anodic plasma, also known as Thermionic Vacuum Arc (TVA). The challenge is to enhance reflectivity (to more than 50%) at higher order of reflection (7, 9, 11) in order to increase the deflection angle of the mirror. This is obtained by increasing the number of bilayers, which technically increases the overall roughness. In order to overcome these problems, new plasma technologies which can provide higher quality nanofilms and interfaces are needed.Nanometer sized monolayers and then multilayers of alternating nano-layers of high - low atomic number (Z) elements such as W, Mo, Ta and Si, B will be obtained by deposition using TVA.

Abstract:
Multi-junction (MJ) III-V compound semiconductor solar cells are the prime choice for efficient harvesting of solar energy. The key to pitching the conversion efficiency at the highest attainable level rests upon the ability to fabricate monolithic semiconductor heterostructures in MJ configuration, with each of the junctions being optimized to harvest a different part of the solar spectrum. When combined with concentrator photovoltaic techniques, high efficiency III-V solar cells offer attractive opportunities for achieving the price target required to make solar energy competitive with traditional energy sources. The efficiency of current multi-junction cells can be increased by a more efficient conversion of the radiation band from about 0.8 eV to 1.25 eV. The main research topic to be addressed in this project is concerned with the development of a new class of III-V semiconductor compounds such as dilute nitride bismides GaNAsBi-on-GaAs with band gaps around 1 eV and improved electrical, optical and structural properties suitable for implementation in high efficiency multi junction solar cells.

Abstract:
Pesticide pollution of the environment is an actual acute problem, with expansion on a global scale and tends to rise. These contaminants are released into the air, water and soil from where are taken by organisms. By ingestion, organophosphorus pesticides get in human and animal body where they cause serious diseases such as irreversible damage to the immune system, cancer, genetic disorders. For the safety and security of the population, devices and advanced techniques for pollutants detection and monitoring in food and agriculture, are necessary.
The project PESTI-SENZ meets these needs and proposes the development of micro-biosensors based on lead-free piezoelectric materials, undoped and doped with different ions (Na, K, Bi, Zr) with selective properties and high sensitivity for the detection and monitoring of pesticides in agriculture and food.
Piezoelectric biosensors are being increasingly investigated because such devices allow direct label-free biological detection by monitoring target molecules in real time.
Detecting and tracking the compound of interest is very important in order to study the function and behavior of biological systems. In this sense, the purpose of PESTI-SENZ project is to get the environment friendly piezoelectric materials (lead free) and deposited to different substrates in order to be used to build FBAR-type piezoelectric arrays microsensor, functionalized with sensitive biomolecules for detection of organophosphorus compounds in aqueous media.
The main objective of the project is films and membranes obtaining based on piezoceramic materials free lead, in order to make devices for analysis and detection of biochemical compounds using innovative laboratory processes and technologies. The specific objectives of the project will pursue solving important theoretical and experimental issues which will contribute to the development of micro-sensors devices which incorporates demonstrator device based on new nanocrystalline piezoceramic with similar characteristics like PZT, and will provide guarantee of a safe exploitation environment.
Methodologies, materials and techniques used in project take into consideration requirements and international standards regarding environmental protection, avoiding the potential damage of property, natural resources, research staff and population health.
The project research team aims to merge skills and complementary expertise of consortium partners, to develop innovative technologies to achieve high efficiency for a sensing device with global applications.
The original aspects of the project, partners expertise combined to achieve a specific aim correlated with the current needs of modern society, provides the foundation for national research network consisting of multidisciplinary teams capable to collaborate synergic and complementary to exploit the extensive research results designed to lead to the realization of a device to ensure safe operation without adverse effects on human health.
Also we propose that the scientific and technical results that we obtain to bring added value to national and international scientific and, as well economic value at least at the national level in the first stage.
Scientific and technical activities carried out within the project by the consortium members will be widely disseminated among national and international scientific community through scientific papers, participation in specialized scientific conferences, patents, presentations at meetings of business people.

Abstract:
In this period of modern industry development that requires different energy sources, a solution in good viability with environmental protection is the use of photovoltaic cells for direct conversion of Sun energy. In the development of PV and TPV applications there are three vectors involved that are: efficiency, temperature resistance and the cost. The gallium antimonide (GaSb) is the basis of the most PV cells in modern TPV systems and its innovative technology based on modern ultra-high vacuum techniques assures for the present project a good efficiency to cost ratio on the PV market. GaSb is a III-V semiconductor compound with zinc blende crystal structure and has an energy gap of 0.726 eV and is worth to mention that the structure GaAs/GaSb has set a record for solar cell efficiency of 35% opening a new era for photovoltaics applications. We can say that in this view the GaSb photosensitive structures offers the possibility of an almost total conversion of sun energy from visible spectrum to heat transform in electricity by TPV effect. This project is related to an end product from a III-V compounds, where the candidate is a well defined structure developed from Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) facilities grown in GaSb system, respectively AlGaSb/GaSb. The main parameter subjected to bend engineering is the semiconductor gap that can be changed in ternary or quaternary compounds by selecting the relative proportion of element in the compound. This offers the possibility of designing PV converters with small band gap, suitable for TPV applications, where the IR radiation can be absorbed ( the project proposes an experiment of a sensor to YAG:Nd laser radiation). In this project we intend to use the technological achievements reached in the study of the III-V compounds from our group, with the purpose to attend a viable GaSb based PV converter starting from n-type single crystal. This is a new way open for our technological facilities in situ procedures that assures the possibility to use MBE for epitaxial layers, experience and performance in contact deposition together with photolithography for contact grid. The preliminary treatment of the surface structures as the information raised from various investigation techniques (e.g. X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy-XPS) deeply affected the electrical characteristics of the device. Epilayers quality will be investigated in situ by XPS,UPS, AES and STM techniques that are available in the Project infrastructure at the coordinating organisation –National Institute of Materials Physics. The ohmic contacts investigated for lightly doped n-GaSb will be in the system Au/Ni/Au, Au(Ge)/Ni/Au and Cr-Au on p-AlGaSb. The theoretical study of a PV-TPV structure related to fundamental aspects of semiconductor devices operation is in the general trend and strategy of the Department of Electricity, Solid State and Biophysics from Faculty of Physics, Bucharest and from this point of view the project integration will be very good. Is worth to mention that the quality of the work involved in this project is expected to attract an educational impact that means that we expect to manage the work for students at master level and probably for PhD. The novelty of the elements involved in obtaining a performance GaSb/AlxGa1-xSb structure will be a part of the scientific results presented to be published in different ISI journals. The market potential of the present project will be valued by our partners from economy, namely SC Omega Profesional SRL and SC ANDISOR TERMO SRL. At these partners will be developed studies of solar energy concentration systems, will be available a solar panel with 5-7 converters of GaSb and at the end of the project will be attend an elaboration of measurement protocol for PV structures and establishment of referee parameters and quality matrix in the facilities of a new and well equipped Solar Energy Testing Laboratory.

Abstract:
Materials with an increased content of knowledge that provides new functionalities and high performances, represents the most important factors of innovation, resulting in durable development and increased competitiveness in domains as energy or equipment manufacturing. The advantages regarding the superior performances and manufacturing of these materials became the main factors in determining the success on the market of the products that operate in complex stresses environments. However, these materials represent still a challenge because little knowledge is available regarding the degradation in complex environments, the manufacturing technologies in highly disperse environments, monitoring and performance estimation, the impact over the environment and health.

Abstract:
The objective of the project is design, fabrication and testing a micro-electro-fluidic system for biological cells separation and for membrane permeabilization by electroporation to release cellular content for laboratory or research analysis. Functionality of such system is based on separation by dielectrophoresis of cells in fluid media, on membrane electroporation by applying an electric field and on evaluation of electroporation efficiency by electrical and optical methods, using functionalized ferromagnetic nanoparticles for cell capture. At the present, the separation technique by dielectrophoresis is performed by using structures with channels where the electrodes are placed on the surface in contact to substrate. Electroporation is realized by permeabilization of the membrane as effect of electrical pulses, and its scope is either transfection or releasing cellular content. Microfluidic systems that use both techniques are rarely, and, related to those that are developed until now, the electrodes used for electroporation are distinct from the electrodes used for dielectrophoresis due to difference in applications, despite the fact that this approach needs complex fabrication methods. Still, implementing both techniques on a chip is a requirement of such systems, while reducing the number of electrodes shall contribute to simplify fabrication methods, reducing costs and facilitate the use of dielectrophoresis in selective manipulation of cells, in order to evaluate permeabilization efficiency.
In this context, the general objectives of the project are: - Design, simulation and optimization of an experimental model of micro-electro-fluidic system with multifunctional electrodes that ensure both manipulation / separation and electroporation; - Masks design and realization; - Technological design and fabrication of optimized microsystems using MEMS technologies; - Microphysical characterization; developing methods for electroporated cells quantification and for determination of dielectric and optical properties after electroporation; - Synthesis, characterization and functionalization of ferromagnetic nanoparticles with specific antibodies for cells capture; - Cells preparation and characterization of dielectric and biophysical properties before and after electroporation; - Testing micro-electro-fluidic system, electroporated cells quantification by alternate methods (electrical, optical) and correlation of results.
The project requests integration of multi-disciplinary theoretical and technical knowledge: microfluidics, electric field effects, mathematical and numerical modelling, microtechnologies for microsystems fabrication, biology, biochemistry, biophysics, nanoparticles syntetization and characterization, optics. By comparison to conventional devices, the microsystem proposed for fabrication and testing offers advantages such as reduced fabrication costs due to simplified electrodes, low power consumption, reduction of heating effects, better control on electrical parameters, implying increased efficiency and precision. The microsystem can be integrated in lab-on-chip devices or sensors for biochemical analysis, diagnosis of cellular properties and content or therapy by transfection. Last, but not least, the research can give answers to questions related to dielectric properties variation of electroporated cells or to selective separation means of electroporated versus unmodified cells.
