Abstract:
The project aims to develop, design and implement of the new processing algorithms and methods for medical signals and the implementation of these methods in applications designed for monitoring the health of patients and telemedicine. These applications will be implemented on embedded devices and will aim to monitor the status of patients with generation of alerts and applications of biometrics for authentication using ECG signal. These methods are based on the transformation of the biomedical signals in signals with high degree of sparsity, modeling or representation of the medical signal according to its specific dictionaries. Algorithms will be designed dedicated to the ECG and EEG signal. The main focus will be on designing algorithms dedicated, that take into consideration the particularities of the physiological signal used (for ex. the cyclicity of the ECG signal and the variability of the cardiac rhythm, occurrence of evoked potentials on the EEG signal, etc). The proposed theme is one with good present and future perspectives, being a theme of interdisciplinarity, bringing together three important fields, mathematic fundamentals, their implementation in signal processing techniques and the medical field. The interdisciplinary character is derived from the use of compressed sensing-CS in the ECG and EEG signals processing and the implementation of devices for monitoring of patients with ECG and EEG relevant diseases using CS concept and applications of biometrics.

Abstract:
The idea of sparse representation of a signal according to a certain dictionary, combined with the linear programming techniques and on the recent mathematic fundaments (the last 3-4 years) lead to a new signal compression modality, namely the signal compression directly on its acquisition by making a smaller number of measurements than in the classic case, by a random matrix projection.
The general purpose of the project is to develop new processing methods for the medical signal - compression, features extraction, classification – by using mainly the concept of representation of the signal according to a specific dictionary.
Starting from the theoretical section that has been already presented in the specific literature, the project proposes the study of the existent mathematic fundaments and the practical implementation of several new processing techniques for medical signals based on dictionaries and sparse representation, of the compression algorithms that derive from this representation, and of the possibilities of the compressed signals reconstruction. Both standard and specific dictionaries will be used according to the nature and the statistic of the desired signal (constructed on the basis of iterative training algorithms and using examples from the respective class of signals). Will be studied the possibility of extracting features and of classification for the biomedical signals taking into account their representation as sparse signals according to specific dictionaries. A special attention will be granted to the dictionary construction techniques, and to the optimization modalities of the compression and classification algorithms.
The practical implementations will focus especially on ECG and EEG medical signals, which are the most commonly used 1D signals in telemedicine applications and in computer assisted diagnostics.
