Abstract:
Multipath TCP (MPTCP) is a recently proposed extension to TCP that is able to utilize multiple network paths for a single transport connection. MPTCP is being standardised as we speak, and a research-grade prototype Linux implementation is already available.
This project sets out to develop MPTCP to become the industry standard solution for network mobility for mobile phones. MPTCP’s main technological advantage over existing solutions is the ability to overlap the use of multiple interfaces, thus obtaining the best possible throughput and robustness that can be offered by the mobile network connectivity.
Beyond this, MPTCP creates the potential for mobile devices to be smart about their network usage: connections can be migrated between interfaces with the goal of reducing congestion in 3G networks (offload to Wifi), to reduce user cost (by avoiding pay-per-bit interfaces whenever possible), and to minimise energy consumption.
For MPTCP to function, both endpoints must be updated to support MPTCP. While there are strong deployment incentives for mobile operators and mobile users, the same is not true for servers. To overcome this obstacle, we propose to use an MPTCP-enabled proxy deployed in the mobile operators' networks that will speak MPTCP to the mobile devices, and will speak regular TCP to the servers.
To reach its objectives, the project has two main areas of work. The first work area will be led by Intel Romania and will be focused on developing, testing and deploying a production-quality MPTCP stack for mobile devices. The existing MPTCP code has not been targeted for mobiles; the work will be to extend and optimise this code so that it provides a seamless experience to mobile users. This will require cycles of practical metropolitan experiments with key applications running on top of MPTCP and optimising MPTCP to better support those applications. Also, the MPTCP proxy will have to be developed and tested, and possible changes to the MPTCP protocol
