Abstract:
The dramatic increase in the amount of waste produced globally has an undeniable negative effect on the environment. The accelerated pace of urban areas development, the increase in consumption and the large scale of industrial activities have led to a rapid accumulation of waste in more or less proper waste dumps. All EU member states are required to comply with waste management regulations, which primarily provide for the prevention of illegal dumping of any type of waste, its disposal in compliant landfills and their regular monitoring.
The BASELINE project aims to support waste management activities by proposing practical ways for Earth observation data to be used in off-site waste detection and monitoring of known landfills. BASELINE will design, validate and promote scalable solutions based on specific tools for the analysis of electro-optical satellite images as well as advanced techniques consisting of artificial intelligence / machine learning (AI / ML).
The proposed service under BASELINE will focus on the rapid detection of solid waste on land, the detailed analysis of its characteristics and the monitoring of landfills evolution over time. The project will rely on USAMVB’s previously developed and tested processes, algorithms and techniques based on satellite images, which will be adapted and improved with the help of AI.
Finally, the solutions will be integrated, implemented tested and validated in an operational environment, based on specific use cases and scenarios. Due to their scalability, the solutions offered by the BASELINE service will be integrated by GMV in its own portfolio and will be able to support waste management not only in Romania but also at regional, European or global level.

Abstract:
The objective is to build a software decision tool platform to accelerate CC(U)S adoption and lower carbon capture cost by implementing the chemical absorption technology in a societal acceptable way. The proposed solutions will cost 25-50 EUR per ton CO2 captured, with purities suitable for utilization or geological storage. The solution will be demonstrated in UPB laboratory and a conceptual solution will be provided for different industrial partners (cement or steel industry) for different CO2 content: 8-40%. The aim is to develop and build a CO2 capture technology based on chemical absorption with >85% efficiency removals. With this technology the OPEX for solvent capture technologies is reduced by 10-15%. At the demonstrations the joint solutions will be extensively tested and evaluated (social, technical, economical, safety, etc). The data generated, the assessments made, and the simulation tools used both in CAPSOFT and other projects will fill a newly built open-source software platform. Through one or two simulations, this platform tool will be validated ensuring replication elsewhere. As the software platform grows, its value and effectiveness increases for all users. The project aims to bring the different solutions to TRL 5. The dissemination activities are aimed in positioning the solutions alongside other sustainable solutions like solar and wind. The DEMO’s, OITB, the software tool, and the dissemination and exploitation activities ensure that project results will be replicated globally.
