Abstract:
One of the most exploited effects of short pulses of high-intensity focused ultrasound for therapeutic advantage is cavitation. Remarkably, while pulsed ultrasound technologies continue to advance, the cavitation effects have rarely been studied and for all practical purposes remain an enigma. The aim of this project is to investigate the behaviour of individual cavitation bubbles generated by microsecond pulses of high-intensity focused ultrasound near a boundary material. The significant parameters of the this study are the non-dimensional stand-off, defined as the distance of the bubble location at its maximum expansion from the boundary scaled by the maximum bubble radius, and the pressure amplitude in the focal region of ultrasound. The experimental investigations will focus on the jetting dynamics, translational motion of the bubble, acoustic emission during bubble collapse, and resulting surface damage on the nearby boundary material. Physical interpretation and understanding will be facilitated by the calculation of the evolving bubble shape, liquid velocities and pressures, the partitioning of kinetic and potential energies associated with both the complete bubble and the liquid jet developed during bubble collapse. Knowledge of these physical mechanisms is of vital importance and would provide a framework wherein novel and improved high-intensity focused ultrasound techniques can be developed and the systematic investigation of novel ultrasound effects pursued.
