Abstract:
In the project entitled “Dual sensor for H2 detection at room temperature”, we aim at the fabrication of a hybrid H2 gas sensor that combines chemiresistive and plasmonic detection technologies, respectively, allowing thus a double detection of the targeted gas at room temperature. Such a dual approach based on fiber optic plasmonic (FO-SPR) sensor could improve the current issues of the actual gas monitoring systems, namely: high sensitivity with increase selectivity for the targeted gas. In this context we envisage three objectives: 1. Development of FO-SPR sensor for H2 selective detection; 2. Fabrication of hybrid sensor based on combined plasmonic and chemoresistive H2 detection principles; 3. Detection of H2 at room temperature with high sensitivity and increased selectivity. The obtained results will allow the design of low-cost, portable and user-friendly hybrid plasmonic-chemiresistive sensors for H2 detection at room temperature, with improved performance and extended functionality.

Abstract:
In this project we aim to continue our previous original work published in Chemosensors 2020, 8, 134; doi:10.3390/chemosensors8040134, to create an added value to the recently developed new nanocompozite material, which is sensitive for methane at room temperature.
It is a challenge to find alternative gas sensing materials to the SnO2, which has an operating temperature for methane as high as 600 oC [3-6]. The high value of the operating temperature is a serious drawback in the case of remote in-field applications. As such, room temperature (RT) sensing materials are highly desired.
The major novelty of these nanocomposite gas sensing materials as thin films is that they proved to be sensitive to methane (CH4) in concentrations as low as 1000 ppm at room temperature of about 25 oC, without the need for heating the sensing element. We have already managed to prepare such nanocomposites, as shown in [23].
Through this project we aim to develop further on similar nanocomposites, suitable to signal the presence of different other gases, like propane and buthane.
The general objective (GO) of this project is to deliver a stand-alone demonstrative device, working at environmental temperature, for detection of three hydrocarbons: methane, propane and buthane. We aim a TRL 4 level as for our research entities (RES or HE) lifted to a level of TRL 6 by Partner 3 (SME). This GO will naturally be supported by three specific objectives (SO) as follows:
SO-1: Performing saturation and stability tests at long times (about 4-5 hours) with and without methane, and with and without water vapours (RH ~ 50%), for the nanocomposite material we already know to be sensitive to methane at short (10 minutes) testing times.
SO-2: Development of new nanocompositions based on the SnSe2 chalcogenide and different Co(II) and Mn(III) metaloporphyrins, sensitive at environmental temperature to other two compositions of aliphatic hydrocarbons. Targeted gases are the propane and the buthane, the component gases of the liquefied petroleum gas or LPG. We will study the selectivity and the sensibility of the new nanocomposite materials versus their compositions.
SO-3: Transferring the lab technology to the SMEs (Partner 3 and Partner 6) to enhance the TRL level to 6, thus taking the novel lab results closer to the market.

Abstract:
Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) instruments are powerful optical
tools with great applicability in biosensing, primarily because they allow
real-time quantification of biochemical interactions. Though, the
commercial SPR platforms are rarely used outside the specialized
centres, mainly because they are bulky in size, expensive, require trained
personal and therefore they are not always suitable for on-site field
service. To counter these issues, fiber optic (FO)-SPR biosensors were
lately introduced as a promising alternative to the prism-based SPR
systems, bringing advantages such as simplicity, portability and
cost-effectiveness. However, since the FO-SPR platform is in a
continuous development, many opportunities in the design of these
biosensors are unexplored and a much better understanding of this
technology fundamentals is still required to be able to reach its full
potential.
The FOSENSING project aim is to bring and develop in Romania for the
first time a reflection type FO-SPR sensing platform and to evaluate its
potential by implementing new approaches based on changing the
FO-SPR surface condition and the sensor design in order to raise this
technology to new levels of miniaturization, performance, portability and
applications.
In this context, the project entails five innovative objectives:(1)
development of a FO-SPR sensing platform; evaluation of (2) several
plasmonic materials and (3) two physical vapor deposition approaches
to coat the proposed plasmonic materials on the FO substrate; (4)
investigation of a dual-zone sensor configuration openinig the door
toward FO-SPR multiplexing; (5) bioassays implementation within
applications in food diagnostics. The results that will be obtained in this
project will allow the design of FO-SPR instruments with improved
performance and extended functionality and will be beneficial both for
scientists and industry which are looking for new low-cost, user-friendly
and sensitive biosensors for various applications.

Abstract:
In order to increase community’s quality of life, the aim of the project proposal entitled “Integrated development project for advanced medical treatment technologies” (TERAMED) is to develop novel technologies with respect to the treatment of osseous and cutaneous conditions and oncological disorders. Given our experience in healthcare research and the current requirements of multidisciplinary and interinstitutional collaboration towards the personalized treatment purpose, the TERAMED project aims genuine synthesis and processing of biomaterials, but also functional and therapeutic evaluation relevant for clinical trials. The main objectives of the “Medical devices functionalized by laser technologies and alternatives for enhanced osseous integration and regeneration” subproject are to design and produce inorganic, composite or hybrid coatings for superior osteoconductive and osteoinductive performances of titanium-based implants. Smart wound patches and polymeric gels functionalized with antimicrobial and wound healing biomolecules incorporated within micro- and nanoparticles constitute the purpose of the “Medical devices (patches and gels) based on composite biomaterials obtained by laser, plasma and radiation technologies and alternatives for enhanced healing of cutaneous injuries” subproject. The “Technologies based on magnetic triggered nanostructures for oncological therapy: early diagnosis and targeted treatment” subproject aims the development of multifunctional medical devices for specific and selective diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer and melanoma. The general impact of the TERAMED project ensues from the beneficial conjunction of the clinical potential of the proposed medical devices, the feasible technological transfer and the economic advantages of interinstitutional collaboration.

Abstract:
The aim of our research is the identification of innovative technologies for drug delivery applications based on smart polymeric systems. The drug release from polymeric matrices is externally controlled by means of magnetic and electrical signals. Externally triggered on-demand drug release from such smart polymeric systems can significantly improve the efficiency of the drug therapy since it enables the delivery of the drug to a precise location at a precise concentration and for a precise duration. In this pursuit, we propose three synthesis approaches: i) submicron polymeric particles containing magnetic nanoparticles ii) submicron particles based on electroactive polymers and, iii) the combination of previous two solutions, magnetic nanoparticles embedded in electroactive-based polymeric particles. The originality of the last two approaches is the use of polymeric blends and (block) copolymers based on electroactive and appropriate biodegradable polymers or monomers as matrix for submicronic particles. The synthesis of magnetic and electrical-field-sensitive polymeric nanoparticles will enhance the drug delivery effectiveness as a response to the external fields because it combines both mechanisms of release. Our smart polymeric systems will be tested in form of gels/suspensions or coatings of nanoparticles.
