Abstract:
Additive Manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, first emerged in the 80's and since then it was the subject of many researches and technological developments leading to numerous printing technologies (e.g. SLS, SLM, LOM, FDM, etc.). In 2012, The Economist described AM as the third industrial revolution and we witnessed a large adoption by various types of industry but also designers, engineers, hobbyists and consumers.
The department of manufacturng engineering at the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca (TUCN) has more than 20 years experience in the field of AM technologies and built strong cooperation with national industries to promote and democratize the use of AM. The AMaTUC project aims to boost the scientific excellence and innovation capacity of TUCN for the benefit of the automotive industry and personalised products markets.
The 3-year project will build upon the existing strong research and innovation base of TUCN and its twinning partners Loughborough University (LbU), FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences (ACUAS) and Intelligentsia Consultants (Intelligentsia). The AMaTUC project will focus on sub-topics relevant to AM with a high socioeconomic impact for European and Romanian markets. The three (3) project's sub-topics are the following:
Improve existing AM technologies,
Integrate the AM technologies with suitable Rapid Tooling methods,
Design for competitive manufacturing of personalised products and computer planning (CAEFEM) analysis and simulation.

Abstract:
Through the objectives, activities and expected results, the project can be included in the program P2 "Increase of economic competitiveness through research & development and innovation" / 2.1 "Competitiveness through research & development and innovation - Experimental demonstrative project ".
The necessity of such a product has been identified by the industrial partner, a company specialized in upholstered products, working mainly for IKEA.
SOFACOMP is a complex project, involving multidisciplinary academic and private participation, in order to achieve composite materials to replace the wood. The new materials are designed for the furniture industry but can also be used for automotive and other household applications.
The project is based on the experience, on the current business and market analysis of the coordinator, specialized in the production of sofas and armchairs. Identifying uncovered trends and market segments that highlight the need for this product in conjunction with training, research capacity, development and innovation by the UTCN partner.
The project develops a new product (the side of the sofa) made of composite material developed by industrial partner, based on the TRL 4. Upon completion, the technological level of the prototype will be TRL 6. Immediately after completion of the project, the coordinator will take serious actions transformation of the prototype at TRL 8 (product completely developed and certified by tests and demonstrations), so as to produce benefits in the first year after project completion. In support of this approach, UTCN having developed material base metal molds will achieve product realization, under a contract financed from own TAPARO.

Abstract:
The purpose of the project consists in the development material models at microscopic scale and their transfer to macroscopic scale by implementation in computer programmes for the simulation of sheet metal forming processes. In order to achieve this purpose, four objectives have been defined. The first objective consists in the experimental characterization of the materials selected for testing at micro- and macro-level. By achieving this objective, a database referring to the plastic behaviour of the tested materials will be created. The second objective consists in the development of plasticity models at micro- and macro-level. By achieving this objective, the members of the consortium will have a set of realistic and robust plasticity models able to describe the anisotropic behaviour of materials. The third objective consists in the implementation of the previously developed models in computer programmes for the simulation of the sheet metal forming processes. By achieving this objective, the consortium will have a set of robust and efficient computer programmes for the numerical simulation of hydraulic bulging, deep-drawing of cylindrical parts and prediction of the forming limit curves. The last objective of the project consists in the experimental validation the simulation programmes previously elaborated. By achieving this objective, a set of simulation programmes having a high accuracy will be available for the use in industrial applications with the aim of obtaining a realistic and robust virtual prototype. The achievement of the general purpose needs the cooperation between experts from interdisciplinary domains and having a rich expertise in modelling, numerical methods, experimental procedures, with a comprehensive understanding of the phenomena that occur at micro- and macroscopic scale. With this aim in view, an interdisciplinary and complementary consortium as concerns the scientific background and the laboratory equipment has been established.
