Abstract:
This project aims to study both from experimental and theoretical point of view the patterns which form and develop in low densities plasmas. In this purpose several experiments are yet to be performed.
When a positively biased electrode is immersed into plasma, at a critical value of the biasing voltage, a luminous nearly spherical fireball is generated in contact with the electrode. Experimental investigations revealed that such a complex structure consists of a positive core (an ion-enriched plasma) confined by an electrical double layer.
Electrical diagnosis (using very thin Langmuir probes) and optical investigations (using a spectrophotometer) will be carried out in order to characterize accurately the plasma structure in stationary and dynamical state, as well as the double layer at its border. Two or more electrodes will be used for independently obtaining fireballs in order to study their interaction. Helmholtz coils will be utilized for producing uniform magnetic fields in which the plasma structures will be placed in different configurations. Current-voltage characteristics corresponding to the fireball stages of evolution will be traced by means of X-Y plotter. All the previously described investigations will be yet again performed for the case of multiple double layers. In the end, we intend to build a new theoretical model to describe the dynamics of these plasma structures starting from the scale relativity theory and the fractal geometry.
