Abstract:

The explanation of efficiency differentials is an essential step in any efficiency analysis that attempts to measure and compare the performances of economic producers, looking for external, environmental factors that are behind the observed productivity patterns. These exogenous variables with impact on the production process may be quality indicators, regulatory constraints, type of environment (competitive vs monopolistic), type of ownership (private-public or domestic-foreign), environmental factors. The approach considered in this project for efficiency analysis is based on production frontiers. The project extends the most recent results on nonparametric frontier models to the case of nonparametric conditional frontiers which allow including external, environmental variables in the model. In this conditional setting we analyze theoretical and empirical properties of the nonparametric estimators of conditional efficiency providing a full statistical toolbox for estimation and testing. The project develops a fully nonparametric methodology together with the corresponding software tools for statistical inference in conditional nonparametric frontier models based on bootstrap and other resampling methods. The project combines forefront theoretical results from nonparametric econometrics with computer intensive statistical methods and optimization techniques. These will jointly provide a fundamental efficiency toolkit, useful for a wide variety of economic applications.
