Abstract:

From a logical perspective, a disjunction such as "A or B" is true if A is true, or if B is true, or if both A and B are true. The first two scenarios are known as exclusive interpretations, while the latter is inclusive. Linguistically, research has claimed that adults favor exclusive readings, whereas children tend to be inclusive in interpretation, accepting disjunctive statements (e.g. A or B) in cases where both disjuncts (A, B) are true (Chierchia et al., 2001, a.o.). Such findings have been used as an argument for the primacy of logic in cognition and the later emergence of pragmatic reasoning in children (Noveck. 2001). However, children have also been shown to be task-sensitive, displaying more adult-like behaviour when tested with more engaging experimental methods (coloring tasks, reward tasks). While the acquisition of disjunction has been investigated in other languages (such as Mandarin Chinese or English, Lieu et al. 2016, 2017; Skordos et al. 2020), no such work has been conducted in Romanian. We plan to address this gap by looking at both inclusive and exclusive disjunction in Romanian. We will conduct three series of experiments through various methods, investigating: a) disjunction (as a baseline) and the Alternative-based account (Lieu et al. 2016), according to which children behave more adult-like when exposed to conjunctive alternatives, b) the interaction between disjunction and other logical operators (negation, modality), c) disjunction and agreement
