Nicolae TAPUS is Professor of the Computer Science and Engineering Department POLITEHNICA Bucharest, Head of Department (1990-2008,2012-2016), Ph.D. supervisor, Vice-Rector (2006-2012), member since 1990 and Vice-President of Senate (2012-2020), President of PRECIS Research Institute (2020-2024), chair of the National Center for Information Technology. He is Honorary member of Romanian Academy and Vice-President of Romanian Academy of Technical Science. His main fields of expertise are Distributed Systems, Local Area Networks, Computer Architecture. Published more than 300 articles, 28 books. He was a visiting professor in Universities: Grenoble, Free University of Amsterdam, POLITECNICO di Torino and Maryland University. Is Life member IEEE, chair of IEEE Romania Section (2005-2009), chair Romania Computer Society Chapter, director of ICPC for Southeastern Europe Were awarded by Romanian Academy and Education Ministry and CENIC Innovation Award for High-Performance Applications

Abstract:
More and more applications generate and handle very large volumes of data. In particular, this is true for Smart City applications, which attract a rapidly increasing interest from government, companies, citizens, developers, scientists, etc. Applications are fed with huge amounts of input data, in various formats, from a continuously increasing number of sources (sensors, governmental, regional, and municipal sources, citizens, public open data sources, etc.), and are describe by complex workflows that impose real-time processing for decision taking. DataWay project will develop generic principles, methods and algorithms encapsulated in a real-time processing platform for Big Data, which supports Smart City applications that will be gathered / routed / stored via mobile devices and processed / diffused via a more standard Cloud. The main scope of this platform is to extract valuable data to be used in real-time decision taking. We describe these data obtained by different techniques of data reducing, data cleaning, and data aggregation. DataWay platform will be connected to multiple streams of data, analyze data as flows and deliver data to a Cloud infrastructure. The validation of the proposed processing platform we will use applications that, based on pattern recognition and extraction, will assist transportation system in cities (e.g. traffic optimization) and crowd management (reliable communication, multimedia data sharing, path formation, message delivery, etc.).
