Founded in 1860, Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi (UAIC) is the oldest higher education institution of Romania, carrying on a tradition of excellence and innovation in the fields of education and research. In 2018, UAIC was listed in the top 500 Shanghai Global Ranking 2018 (ARWU) for the field Engineering for 2 subjects: Material Science & Engineering and Chemical Engineering; and the field Natural Sciences for 1 subject Mathematics. In 2011, UAIC was listed in the 3rd position in the National Classification of Accredited University, with the title of university of "advanced research and teaching". With only three faculties in the beginning – Law, Philosophy and Theology, the university gradually became a truly European academic centre. Today it is one of the largest and most prestigious universities in Romania, with more than 24000 students (of which 896 PhD students), 15 faculties and 196 BA and MA study programmes, 14 doctoral schools, with 27 Ph.D areas.
