Abstract:
Lignocellulosic crop residues (LCR) represent an important biomass category resulted from agricultural harvesting activities. Such materials consisting of plant parts are of little economic value and regarded as crop wastes. Opportunity of the project proposal is obvious in the light of the existing high available amounts of LCR, further considered as raw materials, the existing knowledge on their processing and the chemical composition.
Another strong argument is the need off boosting up the economy of papermaking fiber production by using such materials by preliminary extraction xylan based hemicelluloses (XHC). The challenges of the project proposal concern: the finding the most favorable approach for separation of polymeric form of xylan and further process the extracted LCR to adequate papermaking quality fibers; recovery and reuse of the alkali consumed in XHC separation; removal of inhibitory compounds valorization the residual liquid flows to chemicals by biotechnological approach; to find adequate treatment of final effluents for reuse or discharge. Specific life cycle assessment tools will finally indicate the environmental performance of the practically demonstrated LCR processing approaches.

Abstract:
The project Food packages from vegetable fibres obtained by biorefining methods proposes a coherent conceptual framework for the transfer of knowledge to the economic agent in order to obtain corrugated board packages, compatible with food packaging regulations and requirements. The central idea of the project is to economically exploit lignocellulosic materials from agricultural waste in order to obtain food packaging from corrugated board, by integrating basic and applied research and knowledge transfer. The project aims to interconnect the expertise of the coordinator with the needs of the economic agent with regard to the manufacture of corrugated cardboard food packaging by: transferring of knowledge to the economic agent resulting in improved manufacturing technologies of corrugated board packages and increased food safety; starting of procedures for the registration of food packages of the Vrancart company in the European system of traceability and safety; training of master and doctoral students supervised by the project coordinator in order to strengthen their practical training in the field of packaging and packaging of food; expanding of knowledge transfer in manufacturing and in the market of food packages made from corrugated board; developing of entrepreneurial skills of the team members of the coordinator. The transferred knowledge will be related to: biorefining processes of lignocellulosic materials; properties of cellulosic fibres; papermaking technology; obtaining and testing of food packages; food safety. The director and project team have extensive experience in the field of the valorization of lignocellulosic materials through biorefining. The economic agent was selected based on its compatibility with the coordinator in terms of the quality of human resource, endowment and development strategy.

Abstract:
The ECOINDE project interconnects the knowledge and expertise of the coordinator, the “Gheorghe Asachi” Technical University of Iasi (TUIasi) to identify and solve the needs of the economic agent Rondocarton s.r.l. The necessity for expertise and knowledge transfer to the economic agent arises from the must to close the production loop in the existing technology for corrugated cardboard and packaging manufacturing and to extend the life cycles.
The identified need to the economic agent will be solved by recycling and reuse of production waste in process, by applying strategies and solutions for eco-innovation and eco-design for process and product (eco-palet) according to circular economy principles. These will generate benefits for the economic agent by increasing its technical-economic and environmental performance. The project coordinator, TUIasi will collaborate with Rondocarton s.r.l. to ensure knowledge transfer on process and product eco-innovation and eco-design, as well as on the tools and methods for economic and environmental performance evaluation (Life Cycle Assessment, Cost-Benefit Analysis, Multicriteria Decision Analysis). Knowledge transfer will include also the dissemination of research and cooperation results for, and together with the specialists of Rondocarton s.r.l.(training, guides, patents etc.), as well as for other stakeholders (papers, conferences etc).
ECOINDE will generate positive impacts on economic and environmental performance of Rondocarton s.r.l, as a result of knowledge transfer, scientific involvement and human resource development. Moreover, master and PhD students from TUIasi will benefit from internships at Rondocarton s.r.l. to prepare the experimental part of their master and PhD theses as well as for the development of their entrepreneurial skills. ECOINDE project involves multi-disciplinary and practical features and will strengthen of the links between university and industry in a national network for knowledge transfer.

Abstract:
Natural ageing of paper documents from museums, archives and libraries is responsible for a huge loss of documentary cultural heritage. The conservation of paper documents is aiming to extend their lifetime by removing the effect of damages and recovering their integrity. However, various conservation methods are applied without a deep knowledge on the interactions between paper support and the restoration medium and/or conservation materials, which could result in physical-chemical alterations and even to the lost of heritage objects. PAPHERCON project proposes new ecological conservation solutions that are respecting conservation principles of reversibility, minimal intervention and scientific objectivity. Proposed new conservation method will bring out following novelties and innovations:
- A reliable procedure to evaluate the effectiveness of conservation treatments, which will be based on interdisciplinary expertise of project consortium.
- New conservation materials based on chitosan nano-composites with specific functionalities for paper heritage conservation (anti-microbial, barriers and strength properties) as more sustainable alternatives to conventional cellulose derivatives.
- Cold HF plasma technique with extended functionality, which offers a fast, non-invasive and ecological solution for cleaning and sterilisation of paper items.
- Integration of the both steps in paper heritage conservation (cleaning/sterilisation with consolidation treatments) in a single technology by combining cold HF plasma treatments and multifunctional coatings based on chitosan derivatives.
The new conservation method will be implemented and validated at real scale by the applications on natural aged paper documents. Two working e-manuals will be elaborated to support the new conservation method. Each project phase involves dissemination activities: website, publications in ISI journals, communications to scientific events, organization of an international workshop.
