Abstract:
Our cities and homes are becoming increasingly smart: small devices and interconnecting equipment enable us to increase energy efficiency, personal safety and create a more comfortable life. From smart bulbs to smart fridges, our homes become populated with featureful interconnected devices; we rely on gateways to connect devices to the outside world, for exporting data and importing configurations and on assistants and applications to control these devices.
Currently 7.2% of homes have access to smart devices and applications. It is expected that by 2023 this number will increase to 16.7%. The extraordinary opportunity of having smart devices as part of homes and cities comes with increased security and privacy risks. Devices are now increasingly complex, are interconnected, have Internet access and rely on rich applications. This leads to increased attack surface with famous Internet of Things (IoT) attacks, such as Mirai, targeting low-end devices and communication flaws.
Given the need for security and privacy in private home environments, we aim to create a platform for evaluating smart home solutions. Our focus is on interconnected applications that run on devices in smart home environments and communicate with each other through protocols that are themselves implemented in software; more than 90% of the 2018 IoT attacks exploited protocol flaws. We make use of modern security assessment approaches in symbolic execution to discover software and protocol flaws and weaknesses. The project's main outcome is a platform that will be available to smart home solution providers for assessing their products and ensure security and privacy for their clients.
Project objectives are twofold: we plan to create a platform for evaluating smart home interconnected applications and we aim to develop beyond-state-of-the-art methods for software security assessment.

Abstract:
Quickly developing, upgrading and deploying applications is the core function of the software and IT industry, often achieved through running software on shared hardware (e.g., on data centers) in order to reduce costs and improve profitability. At this point however, the software world appears stuck with inherently insecure and not-so-efficient lightweight virtualization (e.g., containers), because virtual machines are deemed too expensive to use in many scenarios. Unikernels, extremely lightweight VMs, seem like a step towards a solution, but their overwhelming development time and costs hinder their use in real-world settings.

Abstract:
The project “Avant-garde Technology Hub for Advanced Security (ATLAS)” will enhance the research and collaboration performance of partners in the field of cybersecurity technologies. Based on the existing doctoral and master's degree programs, the project will develop the capabilities of the partners in this field and will steer them into creating and extending both governmental and private sector relationships.
The project consists of two major tracks: increasing the involvement and visibility at national and international level through fundamental and applied research; and institutional development by means of knowledge transfer between partners and external collaborators. The research and development program addresses hot topics in the field of cybersecurity, such as: applications and operating systems security, IoT and cloud security.
The major research directions that ATLAS will look into are: enhancing software security using machine learning and formal methods, security of IoT devices using distributed intelligence, new cryptographic technologies for securing IoT communications and cloud services.
Each partner will contribute to the research area in which it has expertise and, within the project, will offer support for other partners or external collaborators. To this end, an important component of ATLAS is the development of a distributed infrastructure for training and advanced research in the field of cybersecurity. This platform will allow knowledge sharing and exploitation of existing expertise by providing new services to partners.
The sustainability of the project resides in improving doctoral and master’s degree programs, and increasing collaboration with external partners in a strategic field at national and european level.

Abstract:
The project Lib2Life – the Revival of libraries and cultural heritage through advanced technologies has the purpose of reviving the role of the libraries as core institutions in the educational process; to give full meaning to a cultural heritage often shaded by the magnetism of the new digital formulas invading the concrete reality; to reinvent reading practices according to the profile of the contemporary user.
The project Lib2Life is developed by a consortium of four Central University Libraries, University Politehnica and the National Institute for Research and Development in Informatics, bringing together top specialists in the field of restoration of heritage documents, library science and advanced IT technologies.
The project Lib2Life has four sub-components with the following common objectives: developing new solutions for cultural heritage preservation; promoting it through cutting-edge methods and techniques; increasing access to info-documentary resources; improvement of the library services; knowledge and technology transfer to society.
The methods and techniques that will be put into practice will follow the highest standards of scientific innovation, without neglecting practical applicability. Thus, along with the colloquia and scientific publications, much of the Lib2Life project’s results have high socio-economic value: patents, registers and public access databases, software apps, guides for strategies and good practice.
